Empowering Older Adults Through Technology: A Volunteer’s Story from 50 Forward Madison

ree

Last year, I had the blessing of serving in several Community Services opportunities, but one experience that stood out the most was my time with 50 Forward Madison. I served as the site lead, accompanying Emma every Wednesday throughout the spring semester. Our primary role was to assist older adults with technology, whether it was their phones, tablets, laptops, or even karaoke machines.

At first glance, helping someone with technology might not seem particularly exciting. But this service project was far more impactful than I expected. We weren’t just fixing devices; we were opening doors to communication, self-expression, and connection. Each session allowed these older adults to gain practical skills, yes, but even more importantly, it gave them a sense of empowerment.

It was incredible to witness their confidence grow. Many shared that they had previously relied on others, often their children, to navigate their devices. Phrases like, “Nobody has wanted to teach me how to use this,” were common. And yet, after just a few sessions, they could independently navigate their phones or tablets and the sense of freedom in their voices was unmistakable. They weren’t just learning technology; they were reclaiming independence and finding a renewed sense of dignity.

What struck me most was the humanizing impact of this work. These older adults were no longer seen as incapable of learning. Instead, they were respected, celebrated, and reminded of their own ability to adapt and grow. Their stories, laughter, and newfound confidence left a lasting impression on me, showing me how small acts of service can truly transform lives.
